San Francisco, take 1

Nossa primeira viagem com a Lilla me surpreendeu.

Our first trip with Lilla surprised me.

The plane part, to begin with, was nothing as I though it woud be.
I was ready for the worst. I've read all the texts I could find on how to soothe a toddler in a long flight (16h total from Rio to SF, with one stop).

On the weeks prior to the trip, I started getting Lilla ready for what was coming. I would tell her all about the marvelous things awaiting for us on our big adventure. I told her that we would spend a few days and nights at Grandma Lolo's home, and it would be super fun. That we would behave nicely, throwing no tantrums and playing a lot. That the bed would be diferent from ours, but would be nice and cozy anyway. That where Grandma Lolo lives is cold, and we would have to wear jackets almost every day. And that her house is far far away from here, and we would have to take a plane to get there.

I explained that the plane would be, well, kinda boring. But we would be patient and be nice about it. She got to know very well that the plane flighs high above the sky, that it shakes sometimes, and it's ok. That she would sleep, and awake in a whole new place, closer to grandma, but not quite there yet. We would first get to Atlanta, and than change planes, and only after the other plane we would get to Grandma Lolo's city, San Francisco.

Sometimes I would sneak to hear her playing with her dolls, and she was like "we are in the plane, but we are not at Grandma's yet. First we get to Atlanta, because Grandma lives too far away..."

So cute!

Check in, despedidas da família, fazer hora no free shop. Demos o seu leitinho morno, boa noite papai, boa noite mamãe, dei mamá e pronto. A criança apagou! Antes mesmo de o avião levantar vôo!! Sério? Fácil assim??

E sim, ela dormiu a noite toda. Deixa eu repetir: a noite TODA!
Minha filha, aquela criança de sono super complicado, dormiu no avião lindamente, perfeitamente, abençoada, a noite todinhazinha. Ta certo, dormiu no meu colo.

(me belisca!)

The big day arrived and we provided a full day for Lilla. Lots and lots of playing. We tryed to get the kid tired.
At night, going to the airport, I kept her awake until boarding, even though boarding time was like 3h past bedtime. It just didn't seem safe to let her sleep before we were all setled inside the plane.

Check in, family goodbyes, time killing at the freeshop. When we finally boarded, Lilla was exhausted. We sat down, I dressed her on her pajamas, and again told her all about our great adventure that was starting. She drank her warn milk, good night mommy, good night daddy, nursed, and bam. Asleep. Asleep before the plane's take off!
Really? This easy??

And yes, she slept through the night. Let me say that again: Through the night!!
My daughter, the one who is a picky sleeper, beautifully, perfectly, slept through all the night, blessed be! Ok, she slept in my arms. She wouldn't settle for the chair. But I don't even care for my sore spine, the kid slept through the night!

After the sunrise, about 2h before the plane landed, I managed to give Lilla to Rodrigo. And in his arms she kept on sleeping until landing. (really, I still feel that I must be dreaming!)

The tricky part was the connection. The imigration line in Atlanta was HUGE. Lilla didn't want to take her jammies off. She was a little cranky, but that's normal for her in early mornings. We almost missed the second flight.

When we boarded Lilla was feeling much better already. We played with all the stuff I packed: crayons, markers, little toys, books. We told stories, we sang. All in perfect peace. She even took a nap! And woke up to the plane's landing in SF, uncomfortable with the pressure in her ears.

We were finally welcomed by my beautifull mommy!

Unfortunatly, I only have these terrible pictures. I guess we were just too emotional to remember proper potographing!

(I've decided to take apart the giant trip post into several smaller ones. Do you prefere them to be separeted in topics like "childrens outings", "favorite spots" or in dates?)
